CHAPTER FIFTEEN
Itâs a letter to me in Granâs handwriting.
To my darling Primrose
Iâve put off writing this letter because I was so frightened I wouldnât be able to explain to you everything thatâs in my heart. And my heart is so full, my darling â of hopes and wishes for you, and sadness that our time together is coming to an end, but mostly, itâs full of love for you, my precious granddaughter.
You have been the sunshine in my life.
You got me through the most terrible time. I think we got each other through. And the bond between us has been all the stronger because of it.
My precious girl, you are the whole world to me and it breaks my heart that I will have to say goodbye to you. I know in my heart that youâll be fine. But thereâs nothing like the love of a family to make you feel complete.
So . . . my dearest wish now is that you search for your other kin. Your biological family. Your grandad Joe and I were so blessed to be able to adopt our gorgeous Connie and she gave us so much pleasure down the years and made us so very proud. Just as you have, my love.
Connie never seemed to feel the need to go looking for her birth mother. If sheâd expressed any curiosity at all, I would have encouraged her in her search, but she never did. I once asked her about it, but she said (and I think she was being honest) that she already had the best parents a girl could ever wish for, so why would she need to spoil something that didnât need fixing?
You have meant the world to me, Primrose, and it scares me to think of you all alone once Iâve gone. So please, for both our sakes, try to find the woman who gave birth to your lovely mum. Promise me you will search for her, my love.
Iâve no idea what her circumstances were, but she likely made a terrible sacrifice, letting her baby go, and she may have spent her whole life regretting her decision. But when you find her, Iâm certain you will fill that place in her heart that has been empty since she parted with her Connie.
When she meets you, I know she will love you as much as I do.
So please find her, my darling.
When you read my journal, you will find out about my box of precious memories I put together when we adopted Connie. Iâve kept it all this time at the back of my underwear drawer! And now itâs yours.
So, my darling, always remember how very much you were loved â by your adoring mum and your dad, by your doting grandad, and of course me. Carry that with you always and look to your future with a hopeful smile. Things might seem bleak now, but you are strong and kind and loving, and I know youâre going to be fine.
Love you always and forever.
